I hate touchpads. So when I got my laptop I had to find a portable mouse to use or else I was going to go insane. And it might as well be wireless too, right? In my search for a portable wireless mouse I came across some truly horrible designs and ideas. At first I was opposed to a wireless mouse that had it’s own special dongle. Then I tried several Bluetooth mice and that was frustrating. Finally I found the Microsoft Wireless Mobile Mouse 4000 and I haven’t looked back.
The 4000 is compact but still fits nicely in my hand (and I have pretty meaty hands). It runs on a single AA battery and I have to change it about ever two months. It gives you plenty of warning when the battery is dying too; I have never been stuck with a dead mouse. It has some nice customizable buttons (one on the left side, one on the right side and the scroll wheel tilts left and right for two more) which is surprising at this price point and on a mouse targeted to the mobile crowd. It also comes in a wide variety of colors but the super great feature is that the dongle stores in the bottom of the mouse so you don’t lose it, though the dongle is so small that I can leave it in my laptop without any problems.
All in all it’s surprisingly well designed for hardware from Microsoft. It’s sleek, elegant and is very comfortable. I couldn’t be happier.
