The Larry Sanders Show was an HBO show about the inner workings of a late-night talk show. It premiered in 1992 and ran for six seasons. For those, like myself, who didn’t catch it the first time, the first season wasn’t available on DVD until 2002. Now watching it almost 20 years later, does it stand the test of time?
Absolutely “Yes!” Sure some things are a bit dated, most notably Janeane Garofalo‘s character is dressed in grunge style clothes, but the comedy is still smart and funny. Gary Shandling is hilarious as the neurotic comedic host of the fictional Larry Sanders Show. Rip Torn as the kiss-ass producer is annoyingly delightful and Jeffrey Tambor, as Larry’s sidekick Hank Kingsley has his own bag of funny neurosis.
It’s definitely worth checking out if you haven’t seen it before and can stand a couple dated references and looks.
