Growing up I remember three tapes my Dad had in his car: The Fixx‘s Reach The Beach, The Firm‘s Firm, and Talking Heads‘ Stop Making Sense. Many of my musical tastes can be traced to these three albums.
When CDs came around and I started buying my own music I soon rediscovered Talking Heads. They had weird and bizarre rhythms and sometimes silly lyrics. But their back catalog is quite large. Too large for a young music collector to purchase them all in any amount of time. Instead I went for Sand In The Vaseline.
Sand In The Vaseline is more than a normal best of collection. Yes, it has all their big hits but it also has their most influential songs, popular non-singles, previously unreleased songs (that are actually quite good!) and a couple of b-sides. It is a great jumping off point to get reacquainted with arguably the most influential New Wave band.
